Disappearing Blastwalls

Post by Firelord »

So there's an issue that I've had for as long as I can remember. When I pitch blastwalls in certain areas on certain maps, sometimes they will disappear when they get to a lower enough point. They're still there, but they don't show up on my screen. I can pitch them back up and they will reappear. Anyone else have this problem and have you figured out a fix for it?

There's probably a better forum section for this, but whatever.

That bug has been around for as long as I can remember. I remember it most from the scarbrae flag room.

What Ghost said is mostly true.

Basically, what happens is the server determines that you don't need to see that object because it's not in the same room as you, so it doesn't transmit the object's location to you. Therefor your client doesn't know the object exists. This is also why collisions with these "invisible" objects are sketchy, because your client doesn't think anything is there, and shows you moving through the empty space, but the server registers a collision and basically tells the client it never moved there, so the visual effect is similar to trying to move while lagging, but you keep bouncing back to an old position.

There has been some discussion regarding this bug, and it's potential use to thwart happy mod by not transmitting the existence of certain players to certain other players, but nothing ever came of it. If this ever were fully understood and implemented, we could also provide invisibility cloaks that work for software and OpenGL rendering.

What else does this fix do? Is there a description somewhere?

This plugin fixes a known level of detail (LOD) issue with certain weapons. This affects those using a field of view (FOV) higher than the default. The video below explains things better. Place the file (LoDFix.dll) in your plugins folder.
