In other news, it's turning out that since I can't tread water... my officer candidacy is in jeopardy, but we'll see... (So it turns out that I'm exactly "unlike" a fish. I sink very quickly in water, and also unlike a fish, I can't breath underwater )
It means to float or suspend your head above water without touching bottom or grabbing anything. I've a really hard time floating in water, period, but I'm taking lessons for it to see if I can improve. If not ....
I had to administer a swim test for a bunch of police academy candidates, and it was quite humorous.
Usually, people who look like you, sink like a rock, while couch potatoes float without even trying.
This is because muscle and bone weigh more than water, but fat floats like oil.
But that doesn't stop some of the lard asses from trying, and tiring themselves out faster than a stair master would.
I'd watch as they all hopped in the water, and the skinny guys either sank or swam (or cheated by touching the bottom), right away, while the fat guys would either float like an otter or freak out like a preschooler.
