There are no items that explode. There are items, that when used, create grenades. Some (ammo) even create grenades when dropped.

There is a detpack item, and there is a detpack grenade. The detpack item is a pack, the detpack grenade is not.

Ran into the same sort of issue with the tank beacon. The explosion is sometimes lost on the player themselves or others around them depending on who is moving where and how fast. Think of it like shooting a gun and then getting hit by your own bullet. Having the explosion take place above the players head helps ...unless someone is below them.

Once upon a time, i solved this by killing the troll before blowing up the pack, but then the death message didn't know who owned the projectile, so nobody got points for it, just lots of suicides.
