I would say $200 for each major part (SSD, GPU, and CPU). $50-100 for each of the other parts (motherboard, RAM, and case.
I splurged when I built my PC... Spent around $1200. You should be able to build a decent computer for half the price, today.
But again, that's if you're building using unused parts.
You can probably buy a used PC for cheap and upgrade it, if needed, cheaper...

I just bought a used computer for $250. Not the best out there, but great for what I'm using it for.

The video card alone is worth more than half what you paid for the whole PC. That was a good buy.

GTX 650 isn't bad for what it is from personal experience. Even the 660 you can get for just under 100aud.
