Toyota Celica's head gasket blew

Post by {LS}RePublic »

Is the server down right now or are we now facing a money shortage?
How many people even play this anymore?
Sigh if our dollar was on parody id shoulder some of the costs... But then again You should ask fish for that dough xD

Plus my 1995 Toyota Celica's head gasket blew the other week; something about there being no water in the radiator..... and to replace the engine its about 2.5k... lol

Ghost wrote:Can't you just replace the head gasket and it be fixed or is the whole engine borked? I'm changing my head gasket in my jeep atm
I sent him a PM on that Ghost and gave him his options on what he could do ;)

Im told the head has actually cracked from the excessive heat, so its more than just 'Blown' xD
It might've originally been just the seal...may explain where the water went.
Its done around 365,000 km in total.
I believe the engine is a 5S-FE 2.2L; Apparently easier to find than some and may be an option to replace the whole thing.
Thanks for the PM

Though so far Ive only got around $1.6k out of the 2.5k ... I may decide on buying a new car but I do like the classics =p

Toyota Celica's head gasket blew

Post by {LS}RePublic »

It did get waterlogged a couple of times, refusing to kick over and making some rather horrid noises. Getting it up into the Garage was a bit of a challenge as our driveway is almost on a 45 degree incline xD

Well we were able to take off the Cylinder head to get to the Head gasket, It definitely looked like it needed to be replaced.
Basic pic for reference:

Also he Cylinder head probably needs to be re-surfaced to avoid any future issues with the New Gasket.

The Head gasket is coming with new stem valve seals, we might as well replace them..

So with the pic below, Water and coolant managed to get into the second piston chamber from left... hence why it looks cleaner than the rest. Will upload some more pics soonish =p

As for the server, glad its up but with no one playing? xD

Inspect the lower part of the motor to make sure the wall dividing the chamber's are not cracked. Also look for any deep scaring "ON" the wall of the piston chamber. If you see deep type scratches on the wall of the chamber, you have bad rings, and your lower motor will eventually go out after you see it burning a bunch of oil that is causing a large smoke trail out your exhaust. If it looks good, clean out any debris. If you have a compressor with a blow gun that works well, but if not, buy a can of compressed air that you use to blow off your computer keyboard with.

When you take the head to a machine shop to get it re-surfaced, make sure to get that head dye checked for cracks, and pressure tested first. The new seals are great, but what is the condition of the valves in the head? If the valves are shot, the new seals won't do any good. If their are cracks on the head that you cannot see with your eyes and don't fix them, you will end up with more problems later after doing all this work, will end up doing it all over again, but this time you will need a new head, due to not fixing the old one correctly. I suggest to give the seals to the machine shop, and pay them to verify the condition of the head before they re-surface it, and let them do a valve job to it while there, if it's in good shape. Your basically reconditioning the head, if they are able to recondition the head it will come back almost as new.

Yeah man, They apparently will pressure test it though not sure on the dye bit. They quoted me $550AUD
My friend says the Cylinder Walls are just fine as they do have scoring 3 out 4 cylinders.

I basically had to pause the repairs as my boss hasn't paid me since the 3rd of September. It being the 20th Today, Ive had to wait for him to return from Peru... T_T
My work mostly consists of soldering and building circuit boards. Operating the robots that place all that Surface mount tech(SMT for short)lol. I actrually do enjoy the work but the pay days aren't always consistent xD

That sucks... I used to have an employer who neglected to pay me regularly...

I considered his international phone call to inform me that he couldn't afford to let payroll print on time as the last straw, and quit as soon as he came back from his vacation and paid me.

Yeah, that kind of sucks Republic. You would think if the man has time and money to go on either a vacation or business trip, he would at least have setup something to pay his employee(s) before he left. If something like that happened here in the states it wouldn't go down very well for the employer with the local authorities. I hope he understands that you need transportation in order to get to work, and without it, you can't.

EDIT: BTW.....$400.58 US is about right for the work on the head cylinder  Hope they do a good job. Make sure to check that head gasket on both sides before putting it in place. A few times I had to double the head gasket on some vehicles due to age and wear and tear.

Does Australia have something like the Better Business Bureau?

That's who we would report employers who don't pay employees on time, to...

But we wouldn't report an employer we intended to keep working for, as that would clearly not be a good relationship, afterwords...

We'd report an employer who refuses to pay, especially after termination of employment, regardless of whose decision it was.
