The faq page has a good tutorial on how to set up the Tribes.exe so it launches the game correctly.
I also recommend trying out a Tribes version 1.11 config with an installer put together by Noxwizard. Version 1.11 of Tribes is useful for using software graphics mode, trying out the training missions and for nostalgia purposes.
