The problem is not with the limit on avatar dimensions, it's the ridiculously small limit on file size.
It's been this way ever since the forum was rebooted after the infamous "fox incident".

Yes stu and srry I typed on my ios device and it was doing auto correct.

Well, you could do as Fox stated back in October, use a image site (imgur, tinypic, etc.), problem solved. I know this must be hard for some of you.
