You need to understand basic physics to know that you the armored player moves faster than a box that has less mass, you can in fact throw the det pack. Not as you would with mines or grenades.

Correction, Ctrl+K throws detpack and then dies, before detpack explodes.
Thus, martyrs will shield no one from the blast.
Throwing the detpack with a 0 second fuse, on the other hand, means the detpack will be inside you when it detonates.
Much like a soldier jumping on a live grenade, it is possible that you will shield those around you from the blast.
Using any other fuse duration will result in the detpack tossing in front of you, and you'll potentially shield those behind you, unless you got a boost after throwing, in which case you might end up in front of the detpack, and shield those in front of you.
For consistent results 100% of the time, kill yourself.

i just use the 5 second timer and deploy a station next to me and spam down the hole re-buying the pack every second

Killing yourself does seem to yield better results.
However it does introduce a ~1 second delay.

Is it always one second?
The code spawns the "grenade" and throws it, but I didn't notice a schedule, which means either the grenade has a live time or the onAdd event does...

Both follow a ballistic trajectory, but grenades will rotate on all 3 axis when they collide with something, and they explode. Items, on the other hand, can be picked up, when colliding with a player.
