Will it tribe?

Post by S_hift »

So I'm at work and I see this guy scrapping some servers from a nearby corporate est. I stop him to see if he's gonna throw em away. I let him know I'll take one off his hands if he's just gonna dump it somewhere.

My goal is to build a server and a decent gaming rig rolled into one, that way when tribes dies i can still host a somewhat competent game server. Any useful info would be appreciated.

This one came with 4 seagate160 gb sata HD's
A DVD CDROM drive
16 hd slots
12gb of ram

At the end of the day. The hardware we have today doesn't make a huge difference in running T1 server. Most important thing if your going to run T1 servers or other games you need great connection. If your going to host it from home not worth trying. Btw funny looking cat. Yours? xD

Thanks!

Na my friends but I help take care of it. I'll host it on any connection to test. But I intend to run it with fiber optics.

What's the speed on the fiber? And if it's at your residence, who's the provider ATT, Verizon? Do they limit you on a usage? If they do, then leaving the server on can cost's you.

The computer appears to have two processors. I assume Intel Xeon. What operating system does it have? Windows server 2003? This will run tribes, but not dosfix.

Also, the raid array is cool, but with 12x160GB HDDs most likely configured in raid 0/1, that's 960GB total... It will run 6 times faster than a single 1TB HDD, but it will use approximately 12 times more power. Do you pay the power bill? Do you intend to log everything and/or record demos? Seems like overkill for a tribes server.

Great for a web server, but SSDs are better in every way, except price (you can't beat free, unless someone pays you to take it).

Nice find bro. I live next to a university. You would be surprised at how wasteful students and the university are. I've found perfectly working core 2/i5 towers, monitors, HD flat screens, etc. in the dumpster.

Yea the way they see these things is after using it for a year or 2, they consider it very old and outdated. Like what the hell, wish i could do they same. But they can, why well because yearly costs are going up and people will pay. So they don't give a shit because they aren't paying for it. We dumb ones do xD. Get my drift?

Thanks!

My college replaced all of their computers, one day... They kept all of the old computers in a locked classroom for days, and then put them in the dumpster on trash day, and posted a security guard next to the dumpster...

I asked, "So, let new get this straight... There's enough computers there for every student, and they all work fine, but it would be theft if any of us took them, but the fucking trash man can come and take the whole dumpster, then sell all of them on eBay, and buy himself a fucking house with the profits?"

I understand they may have FERPA and HIPAA data, but it takes seconds to remove the hard drive. It's just ridiculous to think that other departments, schools, or people in need don't get a chance at them. It also is not hard to do a live Linux DOD wipe in terminal.

sudo shred -vfn 7 /dev/sda
