All South Korean men between the ages of 18-35 are required to serve for 21 months out of their lives per a conscription (draft) that was put in place back in 1965. He's lucky, if he was in North Korea, it's a mandatory 10 yrs. of service.

Yeah, but in north Korea, military service is probably the best job you can get. I'd ride it longer than ten years if I was north Korean... Or defect... Yeah, that's probably a better plan.

Well as of 2007 North Korea did start a voluntary re-up which will re-sign you for another 10 yrs.
